When to use JPG, PNG, or WebP

Written for TidyCrop users who need exact exports without uploading photos to a server.

Format choice is not fashion — it is compatibility and file behavior. A modern site may prefer WebP, an older HR portal may accept only JPG, and a logo with a clear background needs PNG. Converting the wrong way can flatten transparency, bloat file size, or produce a file the portal rejects before it even checks dimensions.

TidyCrop’s Convert tool re-encodes your image in the browser to JPG, PNG, or WebP. Use it after you are happy with crop and size, or before compression when the portal names a required format.

Step-by-step

  1. 1. Read the destination’s format rule

    Prefer the format the form lists. If it says “JPG/JPEG only,” do not upload WebP hoping it will work. If it accepts multiple types, choose based on photo vs graphic and whether transparency matters.

  2. 2. Decide whether you need transparency

    JPG cannot store transparency. Transparent areas become opaque (TidyCrop fills them with white on JPG/WebP export paths that do not preserve alpha). Keep PNG when you need a clear background around a logo or cutout.

  3. 3. Match format to content type

    Photographs and soft gradients usually belong in JPG or WebP. Screenshots with text, UI chrome, or flat logos often look cleaner as PNG. WebP can handle photos efficiently when the platform supports it.

  4. 4. Convert in TidyCrop, then verify

    Open Convert, choose the target format, and download. Confirm the file extension and, if needed, reopen the result to check transparency and colors before submitting.

  5. 5. Combine with resize or compress when required

    Format conversion alone does not fix wrong dimensions or an oversized file. Use Crop & Resize and Compress as needed so the final upload meets every rule on the form.

Trade-offs to expect

  • JPG: small photos, universal support, no transparency, possible compression artifacts at low quality.
  • PNG: sharp edges and transparency, often larger files for camera photos.
  • WebP: strong compression for the web, weaker support on older portals and some desktop tools.
  • Re-encoding a JPG repeatedly can add generation loss — prefer converting once from the best master you have.

Worked examples

HR portal accepts JPG only

Crop to the required size, convert to JPG if your source is PNG or WebP, then compress under the KB limit if one exists.

Logo needs a transparent background

Keep or export PNG. Do not convert to JPG or you will get a white (or otherwise solid) box behind the mark.

Personal site wants smaller hero images

If your host and audience support WebP, convert optimized photos to WebP after resizing to the display size. Keep a JPG fallback if you maintain older templates.

Troubleshooting

Transparency disappeared after export

You likely exported JPG (or a path that flattens alpha). Use PNG when transparency is required.

The file got larger after converting to PNG

That is common for photographs. Use JPG or WebP for photos; reserve PNG for graphics and transparency.

The site will not accept WebP

Convert to JPG or PNG as listed in their help text. WebP support is still uneven on bureaucratic upload forms.

HEIC from iPhone will not convert

TidyCrop does not open HEIC yet. Export or share the photo as JPG from the device, then convert or resize here.

Limitations

  • Input and output formats are JPG, PNG, and WebP only.
  • JPG and some WebP exports do not preserve transparency.
  • Conversion does not magically restore quality lost in a heavily compressed original.
  • Always follow the destination’s stated format list over general advice.

Common questions

Will converting change my image dimensions?

You can keep the same pixel dimensions and only change format. Use Crop & Resize if you also need a new size.

Which format should I choose by default?

Use JPG for most photos and broad compatibility. Use PNG for transparency or sharp flat graphics. Use WebP when the destination explicitly supports it and you want smaller web files.

Does conversion upload my file?

No. Re-encoding happens in your browser with the Canvas API. Source files are not uploaded to TidyCrop.

Can I convert PDF or HEIC?

Not in TidyCrop today. Use JPG, PNG, or WebP sources. Convert HEIC to JPG on your device first if needed.
